I fenomeni paranormali dell’epoca moderna hanno convenzionalmente la loro origine in fatti che chiunque si avvicini allo studio della nostra disciplina dovrebbe conoscere. In questo articolo Bozzano ne riassume i principali, ritenendo che un’informazione errata fornita dal defunto comunicante sia di notevole importanza teorica. Nel 1847 a Hydesville (USA) la famiglia Fox prese in affitto una casa a poca distanza dal villaggio. Dopo qualche tempo i coniugi Fox, insieme con due loro figlie, cominciarono ad avvertire strani rumori, colpi e frastuoni di cui non riuscivano a capire l’origine. In seguito vi furono altre manifestazioni infestatorie, come se vi fosse stata una violenta lotta tra due persone, a cui seguiva il rumore di un rantolo e di sangue che zampillava sul pavimento; poi rumore di passi e colpi di piccone. Un giorno del 1848 Kate, una delle figlie Fox, tentò di comunicare con chi produceva tutti quei fenomeni, rivolgendo domande ad un invisibile interlocutore. Questi, come se fosse realmente presente, rispose in modo intelligente e raccontò la sua storia: disse di essere lo spirito di un merciaio ambulante, che per motivi di denaro era stato assassinato da un inquilino che precedentemente aveva abitato quella casa, ed ivi sepolto. A conferma del suo racconto indicò un punto della cantina come luogo della sepoltura; ma, da alcuni scavi eseguiti, si trovò solo che in quel preciso luogo vi era stata scavata una buca. Quindi vi fu un errore nella comunicazione del presunto spirito.
Secondo Bozzano questo errore è teoricamente molto importante perché alcuni decenni dopo (1904) durante lavori di ristrutturazione della casa si rinvennero resti umani insieme ad un canterano, oggetto in uso presso i merciai ambulanti. Il ritrovamento fu fatto in un luogo diverso da quello indicato dalla personalità comunicante, perché, come si poté appurare, il presunto assassino dopo aver dissotterrato il corpo del merciaio lo aveva occultato dietro un falso muro. Errore non avrebbe dovuto esserci, continua Bozzano, se la rivelazione fosse dovuta alle facoltà paranormali di Katie Fox. Lo sbaglio, invece, è dovuto al fatto che il defunto forniva soltanto l’ultimo ricordo della sua vita terrena. Quindi ciò darebbe valore all’interpretazione spiritica dei fatti. Bozzano però, pur sostenendo la sua tesi, prende in esame altre ipotesi: quella della “chiaroveggenza telepatica” e quella del “serbatoio cosmico delle memorie individuali”, giungendo a concludere che l’unica possibile è quella spiritica.

Summary

It is customarily assumed that modern-day paranorma1 phenomena have their origin in events that should be known to anyone minded to investigate our discipline. Bozzano, in this article, outlines the foremost events in this regard, together with his belief that an incorrect piece of information supplied by a deceased person may be of considerable theoretical importance. In 1847, in Hydesville (USA), the Fox family rented a property just outside the village. Within a short time, Mr and Mrs Fox and their two daughters began to hear strange noises - banging and other disturbances - whose origin they were at a loss to explain. Other indications that the house was haunted emerged later: the Foxes overhead what sounded like a violent struggle between two people. This was followed by the sound of somebody wheezing and of blood spurting on to the floor, then footsteps and blows of a pickaxe. It was in 1848 that Kate, one of the daughters, made an attempt to communicate with the source of these phenomena, addressing questions to an invisible interlocutor. The latter replied coherently as if actually present., and set about telling his story. He claimed that he was the spirit of an itinerant pedlar, who had been murdered for his money by a tenant who had been 1iving in the house at the time, and that he was now buried there. To add conviction to his story, he described the spot in the cellar where he said he was buried. However, subsequent excavations revealed that, although a hole had indeed been dug there, nothing had been buried in it. Thus there was an apparent error in the message communicated by the supposed spirit.
Bozzano views this error as being theoretically of great significance in that several decades later (1904), during work to rebuild the house, human remains were uncovered, together with a chest of drawers, an item regularly used by roving pedlars. The burial site was not in the area referred to by the communicating spirit because, as was later established, the alleged murderer, after having disinterred the pedlar’s body, had hidden it behind a false wall. Error would have been unlikely, Bozzano continues, if the events described had depended on the paranorma1 faculties of Kate Fox. Whereas, the mistake was due to the fact that the deceased had described only the final memory he had of his life on Earth. This fact would appear to add substance to a spiritic interpretation of the affair. And yet Bozzano, while still maintaining his thesis, also considers other exp1anations: “telepathic clairvoyance” and the “cosmic store of individual memories”, but he conc1udes with the assertion that the only possible interpretation is spiritic.
